Vancouver
The Vancouver Sun Run has been Canada’s largest 10k road race since its inception in 1985, and is currently the third largest timed 10k in North America. Founded by former Canadian Olympians Dr. Doug and Diane Clement along with Dr. Jack Taunton.
For more than 100 Years, The Province’s Empty Stocking Fund has been dedicated to making the holidays brighter for B.C. residents in need. With the generosity of readers and supporters, the fund contributes to 26 B.C. community organizations that provide food hampers and gifts to children, needy families and singles.
Calgary
After more than three decades and more than $30 million in donations, the Calgary Christmas Fund highlights more than 75 charities working to help our fellow citizens in the community dealing with hunger, abuse, homelessness and mental health issues.
Saskatoon
Since 1976, the StarPhoenix and its readers have worked to feed hungry families over Christmas – and to help with toys for the kids – through an effort called Sporting Christmas. More than $2.5 million has been raised, all of it provided to the Salvation Army’s Christmas hamper program.
Saskatoon StarPhoenix Plush Bear Program provides comfort in the form of a stuffed bear to cuddle in times of challenge. Local businesses and sponsors help the StarPhoenix support four charities: Haven Kids’ House, Medavie Ambulance Service, Boys and Girls Clubs of Saskatoon and Central Urban Metis Federation Inc.
Regina
The Regina Leader-Post Christmas Cheer Fund was re-established in 1992 to benefit Regina’s four women’s shelters — Regina Transition House, SOFIA House, WISH Safe House and the YWCA Regina’s Isabel Johnson Shelter. The shelters assist women and children in leaving abusive domestic situations.
A teddy bear hug can’t make everything all better, but it can bring much needed comfort to a child at an anxious time. The Regina Leader-Post Plush Bears Program helps put plush bears into the arms of children receiving medical treatment through the Saskatchewan Health Authority.
Windsor
Windsor Star has been a partner of the Goodfellows annual paper drive for over a century to ensure a Merry Christmas for all. Each year in late November, a team of Goodfellows spread out across the city to sell their traditional holiday newspaper, collecting donations that fund Christmas meal boxes and food vouchers for thousands of families who would go without if not for the support of the Goodfellows and Windsor Star.
Toronto
The annual Sun Christmas Fund was founded in 1983 to bring hope to kids with disabilities and families struggling through the holiday season. Former Toronto Sun columnist, Mike Strobel carries on the tradition each Christmas to help champion the fund.
Montreal
For 57 years, the Montreal Gazette Christmas Fund has made the holiday season brighter for thousands of Montrealers. Since 1967, when the Christmas Fund began, The Gazette has raised more than $25 million which has been distributed in support of the neediest members of the community.
